Il a fondé l'English Opera Group et le festival d'Aldeburgh. Il a composé des opéras (Peter Grimes, 1945 ; The Turn of the Screw, 1954), l'oratorio The Prodigal Son (1968), la cantate War Requiem (1962), etc. Son œuvre, très personnelle, est représentative d'un certain esprit britannique.
